Browser Configuration Notes
GENERAL NOTE: For Workstation Browsers to operate correctly with MailGate TCP/IP must be installed and configured correctly on both the MailGate machine and on all Workstations.
You will need to know the TCP/IP address or the HOST name of the MailGate server.
The browser should be configured to use a LAN connection and to use a Proxy Server.
Internet Explorer 3 & 4:
Internet Explorer 32 bit versions 3 & 4 on WinTel platforms: there are several methods for getting at the browser configuration.
- Open your browser, click on View, Options.
- Right-click on the shortcut icon on your desktop and select Properties.
- Double-click on Internet Options in Control Panel.
- Select the Connection tab (below), check the "Connect through a proxy server" box.
- Enter the IP address or name of the MailGate machine into the "Address of proxy to use" box and enter the HTTP port number into the "Port" box (this will usually be 80).
- Check the "Use the same proxy server for all protocols" box.
- If applicable, enter any local addresses into the "Do not use proxy server for addresses...(etc.)" box, and check the box underneath.
- Click ok.
You will usually only need to set Exceptions if your network is complex and contains multiple servers and routers, or if you are running a local intranet web server.
Internet Explorer 5:
Internet Explorer 32 bit version 5 on WinTel platforms: there are several methods for getting at the browser configuration.
- Open your browser, click on Tools, Options.
- Right-click on the shortcut icon on your desktop and select properties.
- Double-click on Internet Options in Control Panel.
- Select the Connections tab, select "Never dial a connection", then click on the LAN Settings... button.
- Check the "Use a proxy server" box, enter the IP address or name of the MailGate machine into the "Address:" box, enter the HTTP port number into the "Port:" box (this will usually be 80), and select "Bypass proxy server for local addresses" if you have a local Website.
- Next click on the Advanced button, select "Use the same proxy server for all protocols", and enter the IP address(es) or name(s) of any Website(s) on your local Web server (if applicable).
- Click ok on all open screens.

Note: when using IE5 on the machine MailGate is running on, the browser will use the ISP connection rather than go through MailGate - causing MailGate to timeout and close the connection. You will need to apply these settings:
- Select the Connections tab, then click on the Settings button.
- Enter the information into the "Proxy server" section (below), then click on the Advanced button and enter the information there (as above).

Netscape Navigator 3:
Proxy options are configured via the Menu:
Select Options, Network Preferences, select the Proxies tab, then select the Manual Proxy Configuration option.
- Enter the IP address or name of the MailGate machine into each Proxy box, enter the HTTP port number into each "Port:" box (this will usually be 80). The SOCKS port should remain as 1080.
- Enter the IP address(es) or name(s) of any Website(s) on your local Web server (if applicable) into the "No Proxy for:" box.
Netscape does not have an option that permits you to enter one proxy setting and set it as default for all proxies, so you will need to enter the same information several times.
Netscape Navigator 4+:
Proxy options are configured via the Menu:
Select Edit, Preferences, Advanced, Proxies, and select Manual Proxy Configuration.
Next select the View button.
You will note that whilst the content of the proxy configuration dialog remains the same as for Netscape version 3, the order of the content has changed.
As with version 3, you should configure all proxies to point at the MailGate server, using either the IP address or the host name.
